Disabled Widow and Widowers Insurance Benefits (DWIB) are death benefits that are paid to the surviving spouse or child of an insured worker, aged 50 or older, who is unable to support themselves because of a disability. If the disabled person was entitled to Social Security Disability Insurance benefits, then they can qualify for DWIB payments. However, you better check your eligibility for DWIB and consult with Pekas Smith: Arizona Disability Attorneys if DWIB is denied to you.

These insurance benefits provide coverage for widows and widowers who would otherwise be left unprotected by the death of their spouses. Any individual, including a widow or widower, can purchase DWIBs. The premium for the policy is usually about $1,000 per year. These policies start paying out at age 60 and continue making payments until age 70. DWIB typically consists of up to 40% of the monthly income of the insured, providing up to $3,600 per month. However, it is important for disabled widows (er)s to keep detailed records of the years they paid into this insurance to ensure they are eligible.

What to Do If Disabled Widow and Widowers Insurance Benefits or DWIB are Denied to You?

Denied Widow and Widowers Insurance Benefits?

The Social Security Administration provides the Disability Insurance Benefits or DWIB for disabled widows and widowers who are unable to get insurance elsewhere. The benefit is only available if the widow/widower was already receiving disability benefits, but it can be denied if they have not been working for a certain amount of time. Even if applicants are denied, they have the opportunity to appeal the decision, but it requires an understanding of their specific case.

In order to claim disabled widows’ and widowers’ insurance benefits, you will have to provide a doctor’s statement that your disability prevents you from working. However, if you are a disabled widow or widower and have been denied DWIB benefits by the Social Security Administration, do not give up on securing your disability benefits. If you have been denied these benefits, contact a Social Security Disability Lawyer for help overturning the decision.

It can be devastating when disability benefits are denied to you, which is why it’s important to understand the statute of limitations, the legal rights of widows and widowers, and what you should do if something goes wrong. A great place to start is by understanding how DWIB benefits work.
