Surya studied at Oberlin Conservatory of Music, where she fell in love with the music of different cultures. While there, she met Michael Rosen, a jazz drummer, and studied African-American music history with Joe Morello. After graduating, she began teaching drum lessons and studying composition under Dr. Wendell Logan. During her time at Oberlin, she learned to read and play music notation. Her passion for music began at a young age and hasn’t stopped since.
